Enabling People with Disabilities Through The Barrier-Free Built Environment
The essential aspect of the barrier-free design is to make the built environment accessible and usable for people with disabilities and elderly persons. Physical barriers deny access to the infrastructures and public buildings of the city, thereby marginalising these people's participation in the activities of the society. Although some of them are equipped with assistive devices, such as wheelchair, crutches, walking stick in general, people with limited mobility require help from others when it comer to the problems of physical impediments. This often leads to the sacrifice of their self-respect. If only the barriers were not created they could be more independdent in their mobility. In this modern era the entity and capabilities of disable-bodied people are becoming acknowledged in formal education and work opportunities. How ever, physical barriers, which in fact are easily recognised, prevent them from full contribution to the society. Their achievement can be remarkable when they are accepted and treated as equal members of the society. This equality is supported and achieved, among other things, by the design and planning of accessible built environments. The physical barriers are created by people who, knowingly and unknowingly, have caused restriction to the lives of disabled persons. Thus, barriers can also be removed by planners, designers, and policy makers if they will identify the fears and needs of people with limited mobility. Creating disabled-friendly environments may improve the quality of life, not only of the disabled, but also of the society at large. Because the removal of physical barriers also benefits the able-bodied persons, designs that are universal should characterize the built environment.
