Removal of dyes from textile wastewater by using polysulfone nanofiltration membranes modified by interfacial polymerization
By the rapid growth of textile industries in Indonesia, environmental issues occur as
those industries are irresponsible about their textile wastewater disposal. Most of textile
industries discharge their textile wastewater directly to the environment without further
treatment, or with treatment but has not fulfilled the requirements to be discharged to
environment. This irresponsible textile wastewater disposal is harmful for the environment
and human as textile wastewater contains dyes which are very hazardous. Therefore
wastewater treatment is necessary to accommodate this water demand and to overcome those
environmental issues. Membrane technology is can be the answer of these issues, by using
membrane technology, high quality of water produced from textile wastewater might be
obtained.
This research is conducted to fabricate nanofiltration (NF) membrane which
modified by coating and interfacial polimerization (IP). NF membrane will be fabricated by
using phase inversion method by employing polysulfone (PSF) as the polymer, N-methyl-2
pyrollidone (NMP) as the solvent, and diethylene glycol (DEG) as the non-solvent. This
membrane substrate then will be modified with coating method which employing dopamine
in order to form a polydopamine (PDA) layer on the top substrate. Furthermore, this
membrane will also modified by IP which employing trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and mphenylene
diamine (MPD) as monomers of acyl chloride and amine, immersed in two
immiscible liquids of hexane and water, respectively. This modification will form a
polyamide (PA) layer on the top surface.
From this research, modified PSF 16/70/14 had shown the best performance in
wastewater treatment by reaching 91.2844% color removal from 150 ppm RR120 solution.
Besides, this modified membrane also proved to have a good mechanical strength by
showing a satisfying performance in high pressure, up to 140 psi.
