Sustainable public transportation towards smart city in developing countries in Asia
Public transportation used by society in their daily activities. Many public transportation available in an urban or rural areas including bus rapid transit, mass rapid transit, light rapid transit, commuter train, cable cars, monorail, ship, ferry, and also paratransits in large cities in developing countries. Public transportation can be the main transportation system and can be sustainable public transportation, as a large part of smart city requirements, if it considers renewable fuels while minimizing emissions detrimental to the local and global environment and preventing needless fatalities, injuries, and congestion. The challenges in developing countries are regarding specific conditions including limited road network density, rapid increase in number of vehicles per year, paratransit usually dominate as public transport in the city, existing condition of public transportation, poor adherence to traffic regulation, limited number of mass rapid transit available, and poor land use arrangement and management. Moreover, almost all of the public transportation modes still use gasoline as the fuel. Therefore, it is difficult for public transportation in developing countries to be sustainable towards smart city. The aim of this study is to find out ways, how existing public transportation in developing countries that experience many specific conditions can be sustainable towards smart city. Case studies carried out at a number of public transportations in large cities in Indonesia as a developing country. Recommended solutions to develop sustainable public transportation towards smart city begin with reducing traffic congestion, implementing intelligent transportation systems, improving number of public transportation (bus and train) especially that using renewable fuel, increase facilities for non motorize vehicles, increasing road safety, until improving integrated roadway, railway, and waterway. Cooperation among government, society, and industry is needed. Furthermore, developing vision and priority actions are also important towards smart city.
