Amnesty international's responses to US treatment of the detainees in Guantanamo Detention Camp
Terrorism has become the main concern for the USA since the 9/11 terrorist
attacks occurred in several locations in USA. In response to the threat of terrorist
attacks, the US government takes actions that have led to a weakening of the
recognition and protection of international human rights. Since the global war on
terrorism was initiated, US military forces have held hundreds of terrorist suspects at
detention facilities outside the United States, including at the Guantanamo Bay naval
base. Guantanamo Detention Camp became controversial and caused many protest
from international society. US treatment towards the detainees is amount to torture
and violation of fundamental human rights. The calls to close the facility and release
or put the detainees on trial are steadily mounting, particularly from NGOs working
in human rights field including Amnesty International (AI). AI has raised concerns
about the treatment of the detainees ever since the first of them were transferred by
plane from Afghanistan to Guantanamo in January 2002, hooded, shackled and tied
down. Nine years on, Amnesty International is still working for the human rights of
every detainee in Guantanamo Detention Camp to be respected. The research
question raised in this thesis is: What are Amnesty International's Responses to US
Treatment of the Detainees in Guantanamo Detention Camp.
