The implementations of USINDO's Public Diplomacy in Indonesia (2008-2014)
This research aims to describe the implementations of USINDO’s public
diplomacy in Indonesia. USINDO as a bi-national organization of the United
States and Indonesia is a part of non-state actors that has a great contribution in
facilitating the engagement of the two countries. This research describes the
programs and activities of USINDO in building understanding and creating public
awareness to the Indonesian general public. The author is going to use the theory
of John. W. McDonald to explain multi-track diplomacy. Public diplomacy is one
of the important factors in supporting first track diplomacy conducted by the
government representatives. Public diplomacy does not replace the function of
traditional diplomacy. Yet, public diplomacy has a role to support and supplement
the efforts of government in conducting diplomacy by providing facility for
negotiations between/among governments, giving inputs through useful
information, and giving different perspectives upon certain issues. USINDO
works with leaders in governments, NGOs, educators, the media, business, and
the general public to attain its missions. Besides, USINDO maximizes the
strategic role of media in integrating all the multi-track diplomacy actors that
determines the success of public diplomacy.
