Risk management and company performance : Nigerian insurance industry 2002-2013
Despite the heightened interest risk management has gained in the finance and management literature, there is still little or no empirical evidence regarding it influence on firm performance especially in the context of insurance industry in Nigeria. Accordingly, this study analyzed the characteristics of risk management in insurance industry and checks how some insurance industry key indicators (considered to represent risk management programs) influence the performance of insurance companies in Nigeria. In order to achieve our aim, the study determined the influence of loss ratio, returns on equity, management expense ratio, contingency reserve and regulatory compliance on return on assets for 12 years on 21 insurance companies. Random effects panel least squares regression was employed for the empirical analysis. The study found that insurance sector in Nigeria is characterized by innovative insurance products and services with significant market potentials and growth opportunities. The empirical results revealed that the quantitative effect of the predictive variables on the performance of insurance companies in Nigeria is very insignificant leaving the researcher with the conclusion that the considered variables are not sufficient enough to explain the insurer‟s performance in Nigeria.
