Wahhabism and Saudi Arabian foreign policy to the United States in 1970s : oil embargo 1973 and Post-Mecca incident 1979
Saudi Arabia is a state where Wahhabism - an Islamic interpretation founded
by Muhamad ibn Abd al-Wahhab - and special relationship with the United States is
deeply engaged. For some people, these is considered- as contradictive. The
engagement between Saud Family and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and his
followers have started since the eighteen centuries. And, this relationship continues
through three Saudi states, Saud made Wahhabism, as they promise, as the sole
Islamic interpretation in their Kingdom. It might be categorised as a puritan and
radical Islamic interpretation. And in 1930s, Saudi Arabia started their oil
exploration in Eastern Region with cooperation with the United States. Their special
relationship was emerged since then. Decade of 1970s is the most remarkable decade
with two unforgettable events involving Wahhabism and, more or less, influenced
Saudi Arabian bilateral relationship with the US. This research is focused on
implication between Wahhabism and Saudi Arabian foreign policy towards the
United States.
Qualitative approach and literature studies technique of data collecting is used
to answer the question "how" within this research. Books and journals is used to
provide theories and facts-to-be-analysed. Thus, understanding of Wahhabism and its
implication with Saudi Arabian foreign policy towards the United States could be
obtained through putting the data into the foreign policy framework.
In Saudi Arabian foreign policy with the United States, Wahhabism can be
putted in input, decision making process, and output of foreign policy. Generally,
Wahhabism influenced input and decision making where it has been becoming some
research, it appeared once when the kingdom is dealing with Israeli-Palestinian
kind if situational factors. Yet, it is rare to be found in output in 1970s. From the research, it appeared once when the kingdom is dealing with Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. From the whole events, we can learn to decide as a decision maker, that we
may not ignore any kind of factors that exists in decision making process.
However, recommendation is proposed for future researcher who is interested
in Wahhabism and/or Saudi Arabian foreign policy. The recommendation is that the
data resources are imported to be collected from Middle Eastern literature, because
the Indonesian or English literature may be westernised in perspective. Fluency in
Arabic is a plus, because there will be many Arabic terms and interpretations of a
single event.
