Vietnamese Theology in the Making
Responding to the Second Vatican Council's call for promoting culture in its relation to Christian faith (Gaudium et Spes, 53-62), Asian theologies emerge as a part of 'aggiornamento'. Unfortunately, they are condemned as unfit by the Sacred Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF). Against such verdict, this paper argues that the problem is the CDF's inadequate understanding of the Asian way of living with God. I contend that beneath the difference about God between Christianity and Asian cultures there is a common understanding of God in terms of life and of union as a way of being in God. I take the Chinese and Vietnamese cultures as an example to show that their understanding of God in terms of life, and union as a way to live in God can be of help to overcome the seemingly unbridgeable difference between Christianity and Chinese/ Vietnamese cultures from the perspective of logical thinking; CDF 's theologians think in terms of the way of living. The second part is a sketch of the logic of heart with its the main principles and characteristics that Vietnamese theologians take for theology: maternity, reasonableness, union as a way of life, pluralism and openness.
