“All of These Died in Faith” Hebrews 11 and Faith in the Face of Death
This article offers a fresh examination of Hebrews 11 by addressing the questions of why these biblical figures are chosen as exemplars and why these events in Israelite history are highlighted. While acknowledging that “faith” (pistis) is the unifying trait of these exemplars, I argue that it is the topic of death that explains the choices made in composing this hero list. The exemplars are all praised for their faith, but the context in which that faith is demonstrated is vitally important for the author of Hebrews. It is not just faith that is to be emulated – it is faith demonstrated in the face of death.
