Climate Change, COVID-19, and Gender Justice : Sin and Redemption in the Anthropocene

Because women, girls, and gendered diverse people have been especially negatively affected by the pandemic and climate change related disasters, the Secretary General of the United Nations has made gender justice central to post pandemic recovery. This article however argues that we cannot address climate/gender injustice without confronting the roots of the extractive logic of neo-liberal capitalism in slavery, colonialism, and white supremacy. Following insights of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, it uses structural violence theory to name our current situation as sin. Only when we sufficiently repent for and convert from historical and contemporary wrong can we start healing and connect to Pope Francis’ ideal of an integral ecology in a deep and meaningful way.
