Design of drainage channel network to control storm-water discharge from a residential area
The development of new dwelling usually causes negative impacts to its surroundings. According to the storm-water management, the augmentation of covering field by development of new dwelling induces the increase of water outflow. The modification of drainage channel will enlarge the velocity of the water flow that results shorten time of concentration and the consequence is flood.
At a certain flat area, storm-water discharge flows slowly in the drainage channels hence the water is held for a certain period on those channels. With this hypothesis, the drainage channel might be functioned as a temporary detention basin.
Research concerning to examine the dimensions of drainage channel has been considered. Study area such as Bumi Cengkareng Indah (proposed to be a residential area) with the average basin slope of 0.203 % has been taken as the model for a certain flat area.
Modeling of either the existing condition or the proposed development area is using the help of computer programs, Geographic Information System Arc View and Storm Water Management Model (4.4.GU), to. figure out and to simulate the design proposed. 10 years storm frequency with 3 Days rainfall duration has been considered to gain obvious comparison of 5 times simulation (in this research) where else the sensitivity of the drainage channel network design might be examined.
The results show that the hypothesis on design of drainage channel network to control storm-water discharge is not a good alternative to treat the storm-water discharge on the study area solely. There is still need some other water treatment to control storm-water discharge. However, the drainage channel network could be functioned as detention basin in a very limited proportion.
Even though the drainage channel network design is not feasible to be the alternative treatment to control storm-water discharge, drainage channel network at an urban area is a must. The result of the cost analysis contributes Rp. 8,674.19 per meter square as the figure amount of money if the drainage channel network constructed.
