Tinjauan pada risk management CV Pelangi dan CV Serra Sinergi Dwipratama dalam menjalankan usaha mikro, kecil dan menengah [UMKM]
Nowadays organizations or entities are not only entitled to survive in running a business but also need to reinvest for growth and development. The microeconomic and macroeconomic environment plays an important role for the future of business to map the plan for the future as there is always uncertainty involved in the business environment. The economic crisis of 1997-1998 shattered the operation of large companies in Indonesia because Rupiah was depreciated against USD tenfold. In effect, many corporations did not survive because most of them imported raw materials from abroad (hence the wider gap in currency exchange rates) that made corporations unable to repay the bank loans used to finance the operations.
In contrast, SMEs succeeded in going through the business during the crisis. One of the main reasons, SME bank loans were not as significant as corporations and simultaneously, SMEs were not exposed to greater risk from currency rate fluctuations because SMEs use local raw materials. As a fact, SMEs have a reputation of having low NPL (Non Performing Loan); therefore they have no problems regarding the repayment of bank loans. During the crisis, many banks collapsed because of high NPL. Based from experience, after the crisis, banks began to build a regulation for risk management as an act of prevention and anticipation for a worse-case situation. Banking and financial institutions are among the first industries to have a regulation for risk management and nowadays many corporations followed suit. Risk management implementation is becoming a trend in business and it should be applied to all kinds of businesses, from corporations to SMEs. However, we seldom hear how risk management is applied in SMEs.
Risk management is not a monopoly for corporations. Subconsciously, SMEs implement risk management in their business through simple things in daily activities, but it may not be as complicated as corporations. Insurance, for instance, is one way of managing risk in SMEs. As the trend for risk management is more emphasized in corporations, this research will try to discover how risk management in embedded in an SME's activities and how crucial it is for the survival of business.
CV Pelangi and CV Serra Sinergi Dwipratama are examples of SMEs in Bandung which are successful in developing the family business. The owner of CV Pelangi and CV Serra Sinergi Dwipratama is also an example of a small conglomerate and it has several business units in the company. The company has formed four strategic business units (SBU) in its recent development. It was not easy for them to obtain success. However, the company managed to survive in the economic crisis through a good business sense and risk management strategy by diversifying the risks into a portfolio of SBUs.
