The advantages and the disadvantages of supporting the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for Australia based on its national interests
The nuclear affairs have been experiencing great changes since the first use of atomic bombs in 1945. The International world has witnessed enormous changes in a wide array of realms in related to this nuclear affairs. Those transformations, in additions to other factors, have forced international nuclear actors to re-evaluate their foreign policies in regards with this issue. Australia as the biggest nuclear fuel reserves owner plays a significant role in the nuclear affairs, thus the author believes that the evaluation of Australia's nuclear policy worth an extensive analysis. This thesis is an academic work extracted from the study of International Relations. It highlights, theoretically and empirically, the analysis of advantages and disadvantages Australia would gain if its government continues to support the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as one of its nuclear policies. To detennine the advantage and the disadvantage, the concept of national interests would be used. For this approach, the author underlines the explanation of pluralism, foreign policy theories, and the theory of international regime. Non-proliferation and disarmament goals are one of the most important factors mentioned in its strategic interests. The NPT brings disadvantages since its flaws have made it counter-productive even dangerous for the pursuit of these goals. However, the NPT has shown that it has minimized the number of nuclear weapons states compared to the past prediction about the possible number of nuclear weapons. Moreover, this regime has enabled Australia to legitimize its nuclear deals and uranium trade, and clearly brings advantages for Australia in terms of economic interests. Lastly it also benefits the relations between Australia and its great allies. This policy gains public supports, politically, it brings advantages for the government. After having assessed the advantages and the disadvantages, the thesis would modestly suggest the implications of the result of this analysis for the Australian nuclear policy options.
