The use of roundabout in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, as a substitute for a signalized intersection
Intersection has become the most critical location for traffic accidents.
Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right intersection design which is safe
and comfortable enough for the road users, and suitable with the sites provided.
For those reasons, the municipality of Delfzijl decided to convert a signalized
intersection at Europaweg–Hogelandsterweg, The Netherlands, into roundabout.
In this thesis, that construction project is analyzed by using the Indonesian
regulation. The Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual for Weaving section is
used as the basis for the roundabout analysis and The Indonesian Highway
Capacity Manual for Signalized Intersection is used as the basis for the signal
controlled intersection analysis. Traffic conditions were taken from the real
situation in Delfzijl.
The new roundabout at the intersection has increased the intersection
capacity up to 120%. Aside from that, roundabout can decrease traffic delay up
to 30 seconds as well as lower the degree of saturation up to 30%. However, the
geometric of the roundabout might increase the queue at the approaches up to
19 meter.
