Physicochemical Properties and Photoactivities of Sol-gel Synthesised Doped and Pure TiO2 Catalysts
Titania-based photocatalysts have been extensively studied for the photo-oxidation of a broad range of organic pollutants in wastewaters, resulting in a complete mineralisation into non-toxic substances such as CO2, HCI, and water [1]. Despite its stability and low cost advantages, the limitation of using Ti02 is the low quantum
yield associated with the high recombination rate of the photogenerated holes and electrons. Doping selective metal ions into Ti02 was reported as an effective approach to inhibit electron-hole recombination and thus, enhanced photoactivity [2]. However, the photoactivity of the doped-Ti02 photocatalysts is also dependent on
the type of dopant ion and its concentration, the method of preparation employed, and thermal treatment used.
