Grassroots initiatives in Turkey
Interreligious dialogue in Turkey since the 1980s has experienced a curious and sometimes almost schizophrenic interchange between original initiatives and, sometimes, even unique in their kind, periods of of major impasse due to the vicissitudes of political life, which often and deliberately conditioned and guided interreligious relations by manipulating them. Following the failed coup d'etat in 2016, the banishment of members of the Islamic Hizmet (service) movement, which from the 70s encouraged 80% of the initiatives and platforms of interreligious dialogue in Turkish territory and elsewhere, inflicted a blow to the heart of the more institutional dimension of interreligious dialogue, but encouraged the development of initiatives perhaps less spectacular but more widespread
