The roles of world vision in mitigating impacts of the Jogjakarta earthquake in Bantul regency [May 2006-May 2007]
In recent days, the roles of international NGO become significant regarding
the limitation of state capacity especially in the humanitarian assistance and other
human security issues. Therefore, this research is p111posed to understand the roles of
World Vision as one of reputable international NGOs involving in humanitarian
emergency assistance. This also tries to describe the implementation of the roles of
World Vision in mitigating impacts of the Jogjakarta earthquake. The case study is
focused on Bantul regency of Yogvakarta province as the serviced area of this NGO
begun from 28th May 2006 until 27th May 2007. This research tries to find answer of
how World Vision conducted i1s roles in mitigating impacts for the earthquake
survivors of Bantul regency. It conducted its roles by providing emergency aid,
creating networks with other agencies, and involving in rehabilitation and
reconstruction. The method used in this research is qualitative and the type of this
research method is descriptive. The researcher takes primary and secondary data to compile this research. The perspective used in this research are pluralism, theory of international organization, theory of humanitarian intervention, and theories used in explaining the definition, roles, comparative advantages, approaches, networks of NGO, etc. The roles of World Vision significantly affected the survivors because it was very responsive compared to other agencies because it arrived before the earthquake occurred in relation to Mount Merapi explosion issue. Besides, the children-focused program was very useful. Nonetheless, the problems and shortcoming were always found in making program to be success.
